10-Point Preparation

Following are 10 critical points to consider prior to selecting and working with an interior designer. Following them will help to improve the design experience as well as increase your satisfaction with the end result.

  1. Plan ahead. Don’t wait until you are forced into a decision.
  2. Have an idea of the amount of money you’d like to spend.
  3. Consider how much cash vs. financing you are willing to invest.
  4. Clip pictures, swatches, paint chips; things that will help you communicate your ideas. If it feels right, save it!
  5. Communicate with one another. Find out and list what is important to each of you.
  6. Have a realistic time frame. Allow at least five to seven week for a bathroom. A kitchen can take as long as three months.
  7. Research covenants and ordinances, then obtain the necessary permits.
  8. Be confident in your choice. Ask your prospective designer for references.
  9.  Study the designer’s portfolio. Does his/her style appeal to your tastes?
  10. Interview and make sure you are comfortable with your prospective designer. It gets personal.
